About

Three Sisters by Emma evolved out of a love of beading, fashion, and sisterhood.

The name of my business ‘Three Sisters by Emma’ was inspired by a few different elements. When I initially started beading, my first project was to make a pair of earrings for each of my three sisters. From there, they really encouraged me to put my work out in the world. It reminded me of how much we all can support one another. We see this relationship time and again within ecosystems. An early food group stewarded by Indigenous peoples is known as the Three Sisters. It incorporates corn, beans, and squash. Each plant brings something unique and essential to the group, and ultimately contribute to a stronger soil and a balanced, nourishing meal afterwards. Just like the food group, my sisters and I are connected and have the opportunity to nourish and support one another. By no means do we have perfect relationships - it can be messy sometimes. The important thing is that we recognize the individuality and unique properties everyone can bring to the table. Ultimately ‘Three Sisters’ reflects my understanding of tradition, sustainability, and the importance of relationship.

Beading connects me with my Métis culture. I feel attuned with the land and my histories more when I am weaving their stories through beading. Many of my designs make use of geometric patterns of arrows and triangles reminiscent of the Métis sash. The patterns, colours, and names that take form in my earrings are also inspired by my love of the land. I am especially inspired by the lands that I have lived on. I currently live in Vancouver, on unceded Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territory. I grew up in Saskatoon, Treaty 6 and the Metis Homelands. These two vastly different landscapes can be seen interwoven in my pieces.

For the past couple of years, embracing the practice of beading has been so healing and has become such an important part of my life. Creating and sharing these designs are now integral to my being and I take pride in making and sharing high-quality pieces for you.

Thank you for your support and love,

Emma-Love
